For 9 months, I sat at around 400 followers on X. I posted tips, frameworks and lessons I thought were valuable. Almost nobody saw them.
Then I changed my strategy. 17 days later, I was at 2,000. 400 → 800 → 1,500 → 2,000.
I didn't suddenly become a better writer. I kept posting the same kind of stuff. What changed was who was around. Same content, different network, completely different results.
Phase 1 (0 → 200): connect, don't create
With a small account, posting value into the void is what kept me stuck. Your only job: meet people who are actively looking to meet people.
Skip the Home feed. Search "let's connect" and switch from Top to Latest.
Be early. The first replies get seen by everyone who opens the thread, and the author is still online.
Name + one specific thing from their profile + "followed you" + a question.
Phase 2 (200 → 500): post your own connect posts
My best one was three lines and a photo:
I'm 36
Solo founder from the Netherlands
Looking to connect with more builders & indie hackers!
Short, a face, a specific crowd, and you reply to everyone. Share every milestone too, and quote each one on the previous one, so people can follow the whole journey.
Phase 3 (500 → 1,000): boost what works
I put $10 behind my best connect post. It's now at 94K views and 474 replies, and I went from 1,350 to 1,800 followers in about a day. Only boost a post built to turn into follows, and clear your calendar for the replies.
Phase 4 (1,000 → 2,000): let the flywheel spin
Reply to every single reply, fast. Answer every DM. Talk to the same people, because in X's own ranking code a reply from a mutual counts 40x a like. And never follow, then unfollow.
One rule I don't break
Automate the posting, never the replies. People can tell right away when a reply is generated.
The full playbook has the exact search queries, my reply templates, 7 numbers from X's open-source code, how not to get throttled and my daily routine: read the full X growth playbook.
